While watching my sister Sandra Tock proudly sweeping the stage with her graduation robe, greeting the Chancellor of the University of London, it reminded me of my own experience in Royal Albert Hall 2 years ago.

Sandra with the Chancellor

It only really seemed like yesterday, the results of 4 years of hard, tough work throughout my tenure in Imperial College London, graduating with one of the hardest degrees referred to as the Joint Mathematics & Computer Science degree. A super satisfying challenge, I might add.

Dr Tock Min Kin, Goh Jun Hui, Sandra Tock, Chris Tock

Yes, it was a really difficult journey. To think that without prior preparation, I would have easily flunked the exams would be a very true statement. Especially since I was very involved with the Imperial College Malaysian Society, the Overseas Club, the Anime Society and as well as being a Communication Director for the United Kingdom & EIRE Executive Council for Malaysian Students for 3 years in a row. Knowing how to juggle time time between skill sets, studying and organizing was certainly a must with the positions I was responsible for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lumix G1 - My preferred camera choice
It’s times like these that I really count my blessings for having studied A-Levels, from where I truly understood how to MAKE TIME for all the above. Even with full dedication this feat is definitely possible, and until today, the life lessons I’ve learned just by attending college are relevant, thanks to the lecturers who guided me, the well organized programs created by the Dean and so on and so forth. Read my About me section for a glimpse of what I’ve been up to
All smiles, the proud father
Come to think of it, Sandra Tock was also an amazing graduate, juggling between studies and her passion as a cheerleader… on a national basis, I might add! Being involved in CHARM was no small feat, as she is asked to train, judge, participate in competitions to represent Malaysia and more! Again, taking her A Levels in college is probably partly responsible for her training and making sure she doesn’t slack in any areas of her life.
Graduation Glee
Even so, we shouldn’t just go for ANY sort of education.
How are we supposed to identify reputable ones especially with all kinds of tertiary education programmes cropping up from nowhere?
This is why when I first heard about Taylor’s Pre-University courses, I told myself how useful this can be whenever I go about giving advice to students out there who look up to me, especially those who are very confused. After all, they provide internationally recognized Pre-U programmes like Cambridge A Levels, South Australian Matriculation, Canadian Pre-University and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme which are most likely choices for those who are sure which field they want to pursue, or want to keep their options open.
I also found out that they not only help students achieve academic excellence, but also provide workshops and talks to help them adapt to college life better and safer, including giving them a Personal Development Plan that will help them towards planning their path between studies and extracurricular activities. Overall, Pre-University courses give a holistic overall education, complete with skills needed to survive at university and for living independently.
Having a mentor is of utmost importance.
How does this happen then, you say? Sounds too good to be true isn’t it? No, this is not something that can be done if left alone by yourself. They actually provide personal mentors as well, one for each student. This is very important, and also reminded me of my own personal tutor during my college and university days, as they were very, very important towards reaching my goals, always getting me back in the right direction whenever I sway and even helping me on the right path to enter Imperial College London, regarded as Top 3 in UK and Top 10 in the world! :p
Thanks, I will always be indebted to you, Margaret Cunningham
Do you want a friend like him? Nah, a confused Iranian in Japan lol!
Of course this doesn’t mean that the Taylor’s Pre-U programme just leaves you at the mercy of your teacher. They even include all kinds of academic, sporting as well as extracurricular support for you to take advantage of. (Sporting facilities are extremely important! Thanks to it I got to experience playing Hockey for Seremban district and got to know many friends :D). One example is the University Placement Centre that acts as advisors on applications to universities in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and more. From what I hear your classmates in Taylor’s would be coming from all over the world, and this will definitely help you to overcome cultural differences and who knows, you’d be making lots of international friends, like how it is with my Swedish friend Johan Nystrom and Sadegh Shahrbaf from Iran, both my long time great friends!
All in all what Pre-U education can do for you will be far more extensive than if you were to go ahead solo. If the academic and student support services were taken advantage of fully, I assure you that you are on your way to start ahead and stay ahead in your area of study and in life. Remember, most of the time your employers aren’t looking for just academic achievements. An additional responsibility factor as well as playing sports as a team member will allow you to show your competence in other skills necessary at work, like leadership and being a team player, for instance. For all this, an all-in-one reputable platform is needed and it’s great to know Taylor’s provides such a place for their students. Learn more about it via their website at http://www.taylors.edu.my/!
Would you want to be doing the same a few years down the road?
I know some of you would be skeptical, so there are actually success stories from those who completed the Pre-U programmes, find them here: http://www.taylors.edu.my/courses/pre_u/preu_landing.php?id=105. Though I would think that the crazy talented Taylorians I know will just leave a note here, since they are fiercely appreciative of their college. Yes, I’m talking about you, Jolene, Kar Ming, Su Zhen and Shannon Chow. Haha
For any reputable edu-institution, their graduate's success is their own success as well
So wouldn’t you want to be prepared with the knowledge and and skills you need so that you’ll enter the University of your dream and have great time there? Wouldn’t you want to be sure that you’re fully prepared for the world out there, especially when you’re set to leave your home in Malaysia ? Be wise, let Taylor’s Pre-U course be your starting point. Once you’re there, you can be sure that they will do their best to guide you to your success, because it will be a part of their success as well!
Thanks to the great folks at Pizza Hut, we got invitation to savour their new products! I guess I have to say kudos to them for taking the initiative and explore the possibilities of social media using blogs (yes, blogs are considered part of SM too!), Facebook fan page among other things. Much thanks to Lawrence Ding for making this happen!
As usual the usual peeps were invited, their post mentioned below (i’m probably the last one to blog about this, heh) so do pay them a visit for better pictures and descriptions. As for me, I prefer to make you salivate with my own personal angle at these yummylicious food, starting from yummy Honey BBQ Wings!
Okay I think the pictures are everywhere but what the heck! Here’s the latest Crunchy Cheesy Bites to whet your appetite. The reason for the shape is so that you can stick in one finger-sized crunchy sticks into your mouth easily, and proceed to chew smoothly! If you’re daring, you can even eat the prawn shells, like I did :p
God this is so awesome. Spicy BBQ Chicken Wings.
You can definitely see the food piling up, they were pretty generous
The usual favourites were presented as well, no complains there. Beef Pepperoni Pizza
To show that Pizza Hut wasn’t just about Pizzas and their famous chicken wings, we were also encouraged t o try their baked dishes, in which case, this is their cheese baked meatball dish. Pretty bouncy I must add :p
Then of course they have the Thai Tuna Roll bites as well.
And who can ever escaped the Tempura Calamari Rings, crispy in the outside yet juicy in the inside. A must have
In between, Lawrence setted up a huge ass flat screen TV to show us their new ads, and even described how it was made! What a documentary… but of course there was a reason for this: their latest competition to win laptops, flat screen LCDs and much more!
Check it out, more at their Facebook fan page.
If you thought that was just it, you’re wrong! The Maju Junction Mall Pizza Hut team even prepared a few strips of the famous TRIPLE CHEESE STICKS just before they get melted inside the Crunchy Bites base! Made of three different cheeses; Parmesan, Cheddar and Mozarella, they were nothing short but HEAVENLY! What an experience
Jess showing how super stretchy it is lol!
Ken showing how yummylicious it is, eating it just like that lol!
Tasting the Triple Cheese sticks, everyone including our dear witch is full of happy face
Pizzas, Chicken Wings, Cheese Bake, Tempura, what else?
Pastas of course, this is their Prawn Olio.
And the Chicken Meatball Bolognaise. Honestly I prefer the latter more than the former, but that’s cause I prefer more tasty food! What’s your taste?
Finally, the Creamy Carbonara which is the crowd favourite. Confirm la, it’s the most fattening of all ma :p
Anyway the day also coincided with Wilson’s birthday, and though it was evil of me not to wish him throughout the day, it was part and parcel of the plan to surprise him that night. He was surprised for sure, and we were all happy for him. Once again it was many thanks to Pizza Hut for being able to cater for a birthday celebration, very flexible of them to go through lengths to make sure we’re happy
So, happy birthday Wilson!! You definitely made the right choice to spend your birthday with us
This was all made possible thanks to the great hospitality at Maju Junction Mall’s Pizza Hut branch. I wish all of the others would learn from them, especially on the politeness and friendliness of the staff there. Besides that we also got to tell of our good and bad experiences with Pizza Hut from both delivery and eating in angles so that Pizza Hut could work on the feedback to make a better experience for us, and that was certainly a good way to start customer relationships.
In the end, from coming to taste the latest products of what Pizza Hut came to offer, we left with a satisfied, all round great “Getting to know the bloggers” meet and I think all of us were very happy to receive free vouchers as well as a beautifully made 4Gb Thumbdrive from Pizza Hut for us to use. Now, tell me, what other restaurants would go through this amount of effort to make sure their customers are happy? KUDOS Pizza Hut, hope you will continue to support us as we will support you!
ps- Don’t forget to join the contest! – http://www.pizzahut.com.my/dining/highlights_oct_01_e.html
Last week I wanted to attend Daniel Cerventus’s Startup Camp, something I’ve been looking forward to as part of an initiative to push for entrepreneurship development in Malaysia. As the event was located at Gardens, Midvalley, I took a chance by inviting Splashmilk out with me for a lunch date, to which he suggested this little vietnamese restaurant called Codo, interestingly situated just above Little Vietnam. Codo had an even classier look, and judging from their dishes, I would think they serve a more authentic selection of Vietnamese cuisine compared to their counterpart below.
They had a few interesting dishes that were meant to be shared. Luckily for us Prue came along and joined us in our bid to fulfill our hunger. Hence we ordered the starter set above, consisting of a selection of authentic Vietnamese delicacies. I think we need not explain the myriad of flavours bursting from each and every morsel found in that wooden holder, lest the pictures doesn’t do it justice.
Here’s another viewing angle. Note that the salad placed in the middle was supposed to be Dragonfruit, but was instead replaced by Lychee since they were out of Dragonfruits. It was then that we realised Vietnamese food places a lot of emphasis on the sweet sourish nature of their sauces, and that each dishes come in a range of beautiful, exotic colours.
Here’s the 3 of us getting ready to feast ourselves. In actual fact though, Splashmilk aka Mikel had already ordered Beef Noodles prior to our large dishes, yet another famed delicacy in Vietnam. It was great, nicely boiled overnight to give the beef tendons their spongy yet firm texture!
Then came the mother of all motherpieces in Vietname. Ok I kid, but apparently this is quite a dish. Priced at 40++ (I can’t remember) it was yet another burst of colours, flavours and interesting textures. Boy the vietnamese can be really creative if they need to be!
I can’t for the life of me recall the name of this dish, but it was mainly fresh vermicilli topped with all the ingredients as you see above, including freshly grilled pieces of lamb all topped in pieces of fried onions, crumbs and most importantly, their infamous sweet, sour and spicy sauce. It is then all “lou-ed” up into a beautiful looking concoction that looks like what you can see below.
The rest of the day, as you can probably tell, was a full-filling dream no thanks to the over-eating we did in Codo. It was really too much to handle, though we did not regret ordering the Beef Noodles. I guess I would come back again, though, only during the start of the month when my salary comes in! (Okay it’s not that expensive, but still… oh and we had free Vietnamese tea as well!)
It wasn’t until later when the three of us made our way to the South Tower’s office buildings, and there was when we met a lot of cool people, heard exciting speeches and once again, got to see Daniel in his full glory: wearing nothing but khaki shorts, slippers and an official shirt. Now THAT’s what I call a true entreprenuer!
It was really impressive. Thanks to that I met Steven and a couple of others. Read more at Entrepreneurship.my!
True entrepreneurship, as Dan says, is about true simplicity. No need for softwares and all that. This is all the proof you need
I can has love lolcats omg can!! Check more here
—
Incidently, one of the most amazing browsers has come to google earth, in the form of a mix between Open Source’s Mozilla Firefox and Apple Webkit to give you:
Google Chrome! (in itself an open source browser too!)
Okay, so what makes it more special compared to the top two (Firefox, Opera, and pls no IE pls) out there?
One major reason: individual tabs are now separate processes but they exist within the same window.
What does that mean? Simply, say you have about 16 tabs running on your browser (normal la) and the one where you were waiting for your youtube to load suddenly crashed. What happens then? That’s right… the browser as a whole crashes along with it, forcing you to alt-F4 everything into oblivion! And THEN you have to wait as it fully loads all your tabs again after it does its recovery thingie, and any information you were halfway typing is all gone into our little black hole in webspace.
Now with the feature abovementioned, you just have to worry about one tab crashing, and THAT’s the only tab that’s going to go, not affecting the others!
Apart from that, in general it’s pretty smooth sailing and seamless integration makes it all the more cooler. In fact you’ll have a hard time at first getting used to the sheer screen size it offers, a far cry from even Opera. You have to use it to understand what I mean lol. Take a look at the comic that Google made here.
So what are you waiting for, download it here and give it a spin!
Update: ok reading this piece of news I might also give the latest Internet Explorer Beta 8 a try, after all, we can’t always be anti-Microsoft, can we? It’s the same with everything: if we don’t like it, we change it, but we must at least give it a chance if it’s good. People power counts for a lot in this time and age *winks*
