I thought you guys have been the awesomest friends out there for the past 27 years of my life. So I asked myself – what would be the best birthday ever for me as I turn 28 this 19th of November 2012?

She just turned 19 yesterday.

I was at the party. Though much, much earlier. As early as @JeffroOng this time round!

Two years ago I was at the same party. With the same people. Same household. Same gorgeous sister. Same motherly mother. Same quiet grandmother (cause I dont’ speak her language, see?)

Same, nostalgic food. Love the spaghetti. Well, there were additions too. Super spicy Kerabu.

We all looked different. No, not older. Younger.

The theme for the party was… Back to School.

And back to school… we did. With glasses. LOL.

My version of back to school… is playing with plush toys. Not that I liked it. I LOVED it.

Oh yes, all of us had the plush toy syndrome. Don’t think you can resist from… the Angry Bird.

Jamie turned into something else. A goth cosplayer. LOL.

We posed.

More came.

The question is… are you jealous yet? Happy 19th birthday Jamie Liew, visiting your house was a blast! Yes, even without @tanyeehou! Haha

I intend to fully hit you with a picture of this finely cut, well charred piece of steak that will leave your mouth agape and saliva drooling away right at the beginning of this post, because nothing else apart from the food would sufficiently do Las Vacas any justice.

Why?

Firstly, I intended the dinner experience to be one-of-a-kind made especially for my sisters as we were celebrating Samantha Tock’s birthday that night. I was also told that Las Vacas was a perfect venue for a birthday do. Frankly speaking the girls and I were disappointed as we were all dressed up for an evening just to find the place a little less appealing than we thought. I, however, wasn’t convinced that the day was ruined just yet.

The thing to note is that, Las Vacas is first and foremost a BUTCHERY, not a five-star classy restaurant that you’d otherwise expect from the much talked about Las Vacas, which stands for “The Cow” in Spanish. That’s right, the place original’s intention is to sell slabs of high quality meat, not to be another “The Ship”, Jake’s or Victoria Station replacement.

We also found out later from the Japanese waitress (the language used there is either English or Japanese!) that the reason why they started the grilling experience from within the shop itself was so that customers could give the meat a go before making an actual purchase. Sweet!

While their primary meat consists of the best parts of the cow (Australian, if I’m not wrong), they do serve other meat (lamb, cheaper alternative) and specialities as well. Take for example, the Beef Wrap below.

Also something to note is that they provide a variety of condiments to go with their food. One highlight would be their mustard choices- dijon and whole grain mustard. (like this!)

If you’re not a steak lover, they have a variety of sandwiches for you to choose from, too. Large in portion, quality in their ham cuts, can’t really go wrong with these options.

Samantha being the birthday girl obviously had the most expensive premium meat type and cut on the menu, the Wagyu Sirloin Steak. At RM60 per 100 gram, the portion she had was more than enough for most decent serving size and costed a lot too! However it was simply worth it. Every part of the meat was amazingly smooth and filled with juicy fats, due to high marbling on this particular type of meat. You won’t be able to taste the fats too strongly though, because of the way the meat is done, it simply melts in your mouth! You have to try it to believe it.

Sandra had the Rib Eye Steak instead, opting for the RM24-27 per 100 gram choice (a little more pricier than normal beef, as it came from cows that were fed high-protein wheat diet) out of other premium cuts such as Striploin, Rib-Eye, Sirloin, Tenderloin, Ribs, Cube Roll and Brisket. As she went for medium rare, we expected the meat to be a little more chewier as how we had at other places, but here in Las Vacas, there was no such thing! Read below to see what I mean

Me? I went for one of the cheapest option available. At RM10 per 100 gram, I went for a decent 2 pieces. Found out that it was too small for my liking and made a mental note to stick with their best offering here when I visit next: the steaks.

As mentioned above, this is an example of a cut. Bloody? Yes. Tender? Yes. Chewy like how you would get at other places? NO! It tastes like any other cooked meat but with extreme tenderness and overflowing juices that threatens to spill with every cut. Premium cut indeed, these butchers know what they’re talking about.

A typical cut of meat (Wagyu) would look like this. Its marbling is gorgeous, no?

For the Las Vacas experience, that was about it. Yeap, it’s all about steaks and more steaks, but no desserts! However if you go to the one at Mont Kiara you’ll find that Baskin Robbins is just right next door, and so we headed there after settling the bill, which was mind you, very affordable!

Then it was banana split time. Filled with all types of condiments just for the birthday girl!

The abovementioned brithday girl and her fattening ice cream. Mwahahahha! We later tapaoed 1 pint of Pralines ice-cream to be enjoyed at home

The Las Vacas experience. Don’t let the environment fool you- it’s the food that you want. Good steak. Excellent steak. Depending on your pocket.

Apart from that, things have been picking up for me.. I’m getting my enterprise opened soon and

seeing lots of support from friends and partners alike Lots of things are happening and while some may be sad, I always believe that situation happens for a reason and it’s time to move ahead- life is short, best to make good use of it!

Okay that doesn’t make sense. But seriously. To make her happy let me just put up a really cool photo of my good ol’ UKEC days, when I first got to meet the Regent of Perak himself, Raja Nazrin Shah.

This good man is one heck of a royalty… His downright humbleness alone can command the greatest respect from all of us, and of course all 600 attendees of the first ever Malaysian Student Leaders Summit at Nikko Hotel. Shaking his hand and getting our picture taken even under the disapproving look of the general who takes care of Royal Protocol makes such an event to be remembered…

Malaysia is now at the point of change, and wherever it may take us to, I’m really, deeply excited to be part of this coming onslaught… So much so that I never regretted taking a flight home to celebrate my first Chinese New Year with my family after 9 years!

Though frankly speaking I still love London like my home away from home, and thanks to AirAsia X, I’ve managed to secure a RM1.5k return ticket to London for next year. Later, I read that the very same tickets all got sold out within 12 hours…

Kinda amazing if you think about it… Ah, I guess it’s about creating a chance to fulfil my Annual Visit London project which will then spur me to work hard every year, so that I can afford the chance to pull this off. YAYA WHO AM I KIDDING HAHAHAHA! ANYWAY, on with the yummylicious pictures bound to kill half of you guys, all thanks to Eddie Kong of Yo! Sushi for the generous invites and the good chefs for providing us lots of extra food

This is Bryan and Jon, who were the first to arrive at the closed-for-private-function Yo! Sushi outlet that looked awesomely like some fine-dining place, except that it’s really just a classy sushi outlet that has a cellar of wine to boot.

Turns out the event was pretty well organized, complete with a (very short and funny) speech made by Mr Jeff Cook of Kendall Jackson, Q&A sessions with prizes and a yummylicious selection of food that complements the four types of wine served.

Ah, always feels good to be an invited guest, just seeing my name there oredi makes me happy So, first off we had a combination of fried renkon, salmon skin and edamame, served with KJ Vintner’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. This was followed by Salmon Tataki Sashimi below, which completed our Appetizer listing.

While there was nothing to shout about the assorted mix, the Salmon Sashimi definitely enticed my tastebuds, and I thought the salmon pieces went well with the savoury caviar coated in what seemed like Ponzu sauce. Certainly worth noting about!

Second up was our Deep Fried Hairy Prawns, which really is black tiger prawns wrapped in Kadaifi pastry and deep fried til golden. Served with wasabi-ginger mayonnaise and fried Shirao baitfish (those whitish thingies), I would have to say a great play of texture was done beautifully here. Of course, this was served with KJV’s Reserve Chardonnay.

Me, Cheesie and Shaz enjoying our Hairy Prawns lolol. Cheesie and Shaz were actually classmates back during their LUCT era, and the best thing is that though they’ve graduated a long time ago, they’ve both only just collected their sijils last week ahhahaha. It’s so much WORSE compared to Imperial who sent mine more than half a year late, but at least they had to courier it from London, UK ok!

Then came our Beef Teriyaki, made of Australian Ribeye Beef grilled lightly and rolled over some Enoki Mushroom and Asparagus, sprinkled in some eatable yellow petals lol. I kinda like this, as the asparagus adds a refreshing taste to the savoury and well-marinated grilled beef. Or just maybe the green colour of it tricks me into thinking that I’m eating healthily hehe, in cue with my supposed diet plan

In the midst of it all, we had the Q&A session popping out and each of us were ready to take home a prize! Cheesie, fortunately for us, was the only one who won and received vouchers for Yo! Sushi. Automatically that voucher became Shaz’s birthday present, which we all conveniently forgotten to get for him haha!

It was then when we were presented our final savoury food for the day, bar one dessert to come. The assorted Iso Rolls were made of a few specialties, namely: Eel Roll, Soft Shell Crab Roll and Spicy Salmon Roll. All were unique, and had a certain distinctive taste to them. I wouldn’t say it was orgasmic, but we certainly did ask for more later of these tasty bites

The last wine served for the day was the KJV’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, which is the red wine you see above. I’ve never had tastebuds for alcoholic drinks (though hard liquour is another story altogether lol) and so it’s sad to say I cannot appreciate fine wine, though I’d like to one fine day.

And last but not least, we had our dessert to complete the Wine Appreciation Dinner set. The Pakistan Mango Pancake Roll with Italian Amedei Chocolate was nothing short of fantastic, as I loved feeling of the sweet, warm mango wrapped in crispy pancake roll melting in my mouth while the green tea ice-cream cooled the mixture down, giving a total yin-yanging orgasmic experience all kept within the confines of my mouth cavity, flavours toying with my tongue indefinitely before disappearing altogether. Urhhmmmm.

And then while people were making their way out, we were waiting for Shaz’s “surprise” birthday cake that Eddie conveniently let Shaz know about beforehand. Yes, Shaz was still excited over it. lol.

Dome’s Tiramisu, if I’m not wrong. Creamy, ice-creamy texture, laden with sinful sugar icing. What more do you want with a cake?!

And thus ends the exciting day for all of us. Once again it’s many thanks to Eddie Kong from Yo!Sushi who treated us really well despite looking like a bunch of no-named guests (haha!) who can be seen taking a picture with Shaz on the right, and of course, Shaz himself for being such a darling for inviting everyone else except for me (HAHA!) and he’s lucky I’m such a great friend to forgive him for calling me Marcus RIGHT ON THE next day after we met each other for the first time! URGH! lol

Haha I kid la Shazzy Wazzy. HAPPY 25th Birthday to you mate, have a blessed time and keep on rocking the world
