First of all, the question begs: Have you even heard of the Iclif Leadership Energy Awards? What about Iclif as an organisation itself? Chances are, your answer is a resounding NO.

Now that’s a huge shame, because if you really knew what Iclif is really about, and by virtue, the ILEA, and with that, the annual Leadership Energy Summit Asia, you’d be surprise in the kind of abilities Asia has to offer to the world.

Take for example, this year, the 5th annual Leadership Energy Summit Asia (www.iclif.org/lesa)held at Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur on 8 – 9 November hosted by the Iclif Leadership and Governance Centre, invites top industry specialists, subject matter experts and game changers to help today’s leaders face the challenges of the increasingly fast-paced and uber-connected 21st Century. Who are we talking about exactly? Check this out:

Dr Alvy Ray Smith – Co-founder of Pixar

Ben Ripple – Founder of Big Tree Farms

Chatri Sityodtong – Founder and Chairman of ONE Championship

Claire Lachance – CEO of Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS)

Rajeev Peshawaria, CEO & Executive Director of Iclif, and author of Open Source Leadership (McGraw-Hill)

Terry Jones – Founder of kayak.com

V R Ferose – Heal of Globalization Services at SAP

Prior to that, their previous speakers were some of these world-renown folks:

Impressed yet? YES! They are but just some of the largest names in the world, and what’s common between all of them is that they have clarity on their values and purpose, thus creating what we call Leadership Energy that spreads to others around them!

This year’s topic is on “Open Source Leadership”; how leaders must reinvent themselves to thrive in a connected, transparent and disruptive environment; and how technological empowerment has transformed companies into open-source organisations. If that’s something you’re interested in, head here to register!

So that’s LESA. ILEA, the Iclif Leadership Energy Awards, functions as a highlight of individuals who share similar leadership energy to those featured in LESA – and its purpose is to recognize and reward the recipients of the awards in such a way that will promote further motivation for themselves to continue their amazing journey, and have a spillover effect on those who are inspired by them!

This year is its 3rd installment, and has seen amazing past recipients who all have strong conviction in a set of deeply held values and a clear sense of purpose to overcome insurmountable obstacles, thus creating a better future for their community or organisation.

Check out the following three winners…

Mohammad Rizan Hassan
Corporate Employee Winner

So you get the gist right?

This is the reason why Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Chairman of Iclif, is prepared to chair the first ever Advisory Council for the awards – to push up the leadership agenda and take the awards to greater heights, by getting support from the newly-formed ILEA Advisory Council made up of some of Asia’s most prominent captains of industry.

These highly distinguished individuals will play a critical role in nurturing recipients, called Leadership Energy Champions, while providing a balanced perspective and insights in identifying, evaluating and awarding outstanding individuals. The ILEA Advisory Panel comprises:

Led by Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Chairman of Iclif

Raja Tan Sri Dato Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Chairman of Maxis Bhd and Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad

Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, Under Secretary General, Partnerships International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

Nora Abd Manaf, Group Chief Human Capital Officer, Maybank Group

Theresa Goh, Managing Director, 360 Dynamics Pte Ltd

Yvonne Corpuz, Global Chief Learning Officer, MUFG

Have a look at the full list as well as the profiles in more details here: ILEA Advisory Council 2017

I am humbled to play a part in this role, a full circle since I got Iclif’s support to run EYE Project’s Student Leadership Symposium which saw young leaders playing an active role in leadership currently, the likes of Akram Yusof of AYLP and Ganesh Muren of Saora Industries.

If you know anyone deserving of this award, do nominate them through www.iclif.org/ilea before 31 July 2017.

If you are a business owner or a brand by yourself, you will know that one thing that will assist you a lot towards your success is through earned media. So what is earned media exactly? Well imagine this, without spending a single ringgit to buy newspaper ads (who reads newspapers anyways?), Facebook ads, paying money for bloggers etc, people will be more than happy to talk about your brand, write about your brand, cover the things that you do all because what you do is crazy awesome. Just like how blogger friend and fellow entrepreneur @FeeqSays covered my #TockTurns31 birthday party <3

Isn’t this the best way to generate awareness and off course sales or support that what you do? Interested already? Let’s begin.

BE VISIBLE, BE VALUABLE

Asians are known to be poor when accepting compliments or to even talk about themselves. We want we need to do instead, is trying NOT to change yourself but to let yourself to be more noticeable. Having for instance, dressing up is one such way to make yourself good at all times, another way is to ensure that you have the best accessories to accompany you when in public. Some prefer to wear high-end watches, some others could prefer stylist cuff-links but I personally think that a beautiful computer can do the trick. You have no idea how many people have looked at me or even initiate a conversation just by having my HP spectre X360 by my side.

Beautiful, innit? Incidentally I’ve gotten myself the limited edition one – see next point!

“This laptop looks really amazing. Is it as good as it looks? How much it is?” This is what I usually ask to which I reply that it is the latest 6th generation Intel-powered HP Spectre x360. They were shocked in disbelief because it is not something they have seen before that alone has given them an impression of me that will last forever. Usually this leads to instant friendship or instant interest in my business. Woohoo!

SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE

Now that with attracted attention without trying too hard (nobody likes that), what we need to do now is to impress them and there’s nothing more exciting than to do it with style. This is when you talk about your experiences, not other peoples, especially unique ones that you are known for. Sometimes you have to be able to sell yourself here, but if possible say what people usually talk about you. After all testimonies always sound better than bragging.

Created by @KendyLife at #kendylifequotes – Thanks bro!

For me, just mentioning that I am a digital manager to Dato Lee Chong Wei, is usually be able to pick interest of even a CEO.

However, what I’ll tell you next will shock you. (clickbait lolol)

Remember the HP Spectre X360? After talking about it I’ll tell them that this laptop can do something that your laptop can’t that immediately proceeded to bend it backwards. That shocked turned into awe as they see it flipped into a pad, like, quite literally. What a way to make an impression!

You don’t see this method in any books but I guaranteed you when you share about your unexpected positive surprises, the impression will last for a good long time.

HEAD FOR THE HOME RUN

Now that you have built an impression, it’s time to seal the deal. According to a research that went viral of Facebook, what do people like Jack Ma (Founder of Ali Baba) and Bill Gates (CEO of Microsoft), they don’t procrastinate. So now it is the best time to show your performance. For me, that is when I show the people I’ve met on what I am really capable of from my presentation slides to sharing our corporate video and the work my team at SocialGrooves do at Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, is usually enough to make them consider that I can do for them be it in business or branding.

During this period, do you know what would really suck? When your machine lags, taking 3 minutes open a video or presentation, or come up with some technical error – those are a big NO NO.

That’s why you’ll need to equip yourself with the best performing machine unrivaled in terms of speed, performance and reliability. To me, that has to be Microsoft @-Intel combo such as my HP Spectre X360 limited edition with the amazing specifications which are future proof! Go buy them now lol

SUMMARY

I hope that despite my hard selling of Microsoft-Intel’s amazing capabilities, you be able to retrieve the secrets of generating conversations and getting noticed about the work that you do, just as I did. That is how YOU can generate earned media for yourselves and your business.

Take it from this blogger that has gotten mentions from most Malaysians news portals, magazines, TV’s and even international ones like Huffington Post, CNBC and more. Let me know if I can help you further by commenting on this post, otherwise if you haven’t already it is time to get an upgrade of your laptop at www.makemagic.my while discounts are still available!

So you’ve heard that the Edge is finally here, inbuilt with Microsoft Windows 10. It is arguably one of the best upgrades you’ll find among other Microsoft native applications that came along with it, thanks to the amount of synergy it has with each other.

Can’t believe me, can you? Don’t worry, I started with a lot of skeptism too. That’s why ever since I came on board the campaign I basically forced myself to work with the Edge in order to give it a fair evaluation and to feel the difference. Good news? Nothing changed for me except for a little layout issues with uncompatible websites. Otherwise all major functions like internet banking, working with online softwares and most importantly, playing games on Kongregate worked as normal.

In fact, I realize that I could open more than 10 tabs and still not get that overpowering memory eating ability I get from Chrome! So that’s also a plus point. So what’s the downside? To be honest I haven’t seen any really. I guess that’s a good start right? So here comes the additional time-saving feature…

Now this is one of the integration efforts that actually makes sense! With the Microsoft OneNote embedded into Edge, I can basically do this…

Then select my weapon…

Then make some important-sounding comments…

Save it on my OneNote made accessible on cloud anytime, everytime

Or send it to my colleagues who would understand all my instructions in super clear visual form, eliminating any room for mistakes!

Now how about that? Remember those days when you had to download screen capture apps, or to use the cumbersome snips tools? For me I had to use one of my browser’s widget to do the trick. Apple users out there can use shortcuts, but lack the instantaneous sharing feature. All in all, this trick has made me cut down my time spent on giving instructions etc to at least half!!! You can see why too, right? What do you think of this feature?

2. SIMULTANEOUS SHARING WITH MAIL

Okay, now bring yourself back to the image I shared above. See that Mail app? Honestly although I switched to Windows 10 a few months back, I never bothered to use native apps – in fact I didn’t even know Windows had an App Store equivalent called Windows Store (A+ for originality LULZ)

But hey, why not give it a spin right. So the ever curious me found out that the Mail app was really easy to use, and most importantly, it’s been integrated in more ways than I could count! Actions that used to take me 5-6 clicks have now been reduced to 2, thanks to the sweet combination of predictive next action steps and the new action sidebar popping up on the right side of the screen.

More importantly, I can load in all my e-mail accounts now that they no longer restrict themselves to just Outlook and Hotmail. So, I could really navigate anywhere, be able to share anything including files of all types and select my choice of e-mail to send it out with, important for someone like me who is part of one too many companies and organisations haha.

All in all, I kind of forgotten how it feels to operate a native app, as opposed to web-based experience like the Gmail. I’ve lost all confidence native apps that I forgot how much more powerful and speedy it is supposed to be, and yes, I did save a lot of time thanks to Mail App!

Try giving it a spin, it’s honestly pretty amazing <3

3. COLLABORATIVE APPROACH WITH ONENOTE

Ever had to work in a team? At some point, you have to, even as a freelancer! Why? Because then, your client is also part of your “team” as you work alongside each other in a campaign or contract right?

That’s where the OneNote comes to play. It’s a huge upgrade from what OneNote used to be, and coupled with the OneDrive, it has become the One.

LOL. Jokes aside.

Now remember how in Point 1 I could save whatever I want to say about the web at my OneNote? Here’s the next step: imagine that particular OneNote book is shared with multiple users. Wallah, instant information transaction reducing the chances of miscommunication to NIL!

The days of new apps being built to help with collaboration started because there wasn’t enough juice coming from the OSes. With the OneNote/OneDrive/Edge combo, you can literally feel the transformation happen right in front of your eyes. Maintaining standard reports, sending changes done to the team, working with others who are miles away, or just sharing a little note of love for family members has become this easy…

This should help you create even more opportunities to take up jobs you’ve never dared before, afraid of lack of time and resources. It did the trick for me, my efficiency level has soared to greater heights ever since I found all this shortcuts, and there’s probably more yet to be uncovered haha!

Or it could be just because I love my Spectre so much to I feel motivated to work.

Yeah, that’s probably the real answer. *grin*

So what do you think of all the techhacks I’ve shared so far? I’m pretty sure this is the first time you’re reading about this because Windows 10 is really new, and most don’t find the need to explore what it can truly do. Coupled with the latest Intel 6th generation processor which does the impossible like adding to the power & speed while increasing battery life, you can truly do wonders with technology to help you in your entrepreneurial world as well as your life.

At the very least, solving a lot of your current problems in the fastest speed will allow you time to learn more skills on your own. Coding and creating websites is fast becoming a need in this connected world, and the last I checked, a good web developer on hire can cost up to RM6,000 per month! There’s truly an economy to take advantage of when you’re techsavvy, and that’s what I tell myself everyday to keep me motivated

Yes, super motivated because my techhack has gotten me to be on the official Microsoft website <3

Well, feel free to share constructive comments about what I shared here and if you have any more tips and tricks you’d love to share, do comment. There’s always room for more magic Check out http://makemagic.my to find out the best Microsoft x Intel combo you’ll want to get to prepare yourself for a great year of 2016!

After watching Spectre of the Bond series, tell me: what is that one thing Bond cannot live without?

I’ll tell you what, it is the technology. The Bond girls comes and leaves, agents dies too often, everyone’s room is his own, and I can go on and on. But he does not say NO to technology, that even his classic ride in the movie could churn out state-of-the-art weapon systems.

Here’s a tip – you can be Bond too. Not the Bond who assassinates, but the Bond, in Business. Instead of having high tech weapons, you get high tech state-of-the-art lumps of metal to churn you important data and create engagements across the seas we call, the computer. But not just ANY computer – you get a laptop so personalized to your needs and completes your classy look, you’ll even carry it around like an accessory when it’s out of battery. Like mine *grin*

What am I talking about? It’s the uber cool HP Spectre X360.
Equipped with the ever dependable state-of-the-art 6th Gen Intel processor and Windows 10 of course

I’ve been in love with her ever since I first gave it my virgin experience.

Here’s why.

1. SLEEK DESIGN

The HP Spectre X360’s silver matte colour and combination of sexy curves and lines gives it a very fashionable look! There was a time when I had to think twice before pulling out my previous laptops in front of my client, and wishing that they won’t judge a creative enterprise from my bulky machine – no more of that! Pride is what you wear when you own this beast with its metallic finishing.

Why does this matter? Tip: giving a great impression raises your chances of securing the job, so do it like a Bond

Just another look from the back while it is still closed. Sturdy, sexy and reliable, just what you need on an everyday basis!

2. IT’S POWERFULLY FLAT – AT EVERY ANGLE!

No matter how you look at it, this thing is a piece of art. How they managed to give it a fashionable look while fully retaining its power, is what I call evolution beyond expectations. Look at the keyboard, it’s sexy as hell you gotta admit it! At the very least I’d commend the keyboard as it is really easy to use, smooth to touch and lights up in the dark. I do work best in the best conditions, and so do you I’m sure.

Oh wait, did you know that the HP Spectre X360’s battery can last at least 6-8 hours for me? Now you do, and even then, the Intel Core i7-6200U Processor inside powers up the beast to a speed that’s so smooth, it fits is label of the Spectre, the Bond of all laptops.

Stability & endurance is what you need when you are fully focused on your goals. The HP Spectre X360 is just that.

3. IT BENDS OVER BACKWARD FOR YOU

Yes it literally does! You’ve no idea how many countless of expression I’ve seen whenever I do the “flattening” act. Even my compatriots in the #MakeMagicEveryday campaign, Sabrina & Shawn Lee were jealous of my Spectre (no pun intended). In business, you’ll be looking to work for people who will bend over backwards for you – so why not start with the machine which is going to help you achieve your dreams?

Oh and you know what else bends backwards for you? The amazing speed in which Windows 10 switches between being a laptop and tablet. Damn.

4. STANDS OUT WITH SPEED

Surprised at the way it naturally acts as a tablet? And an uber cool one at that? Or just at how messy my table is? Ignore that. In fact, a messy mind is an indicator of a genius, I read yesterday, so don’t judge

But hey! Most laptops can do that now with Windows 10 available for upgrade on most (legal) machines. So how does my Spectre win this round? Clearly by its SPEED. As I’ve mentioned in my previous post, I’ve no longer a need to keep my iPad and laptop in my bag making it look so bulky. This two-in-one beauty is sturdy enough to become my work companion yet light and flexible enough to turn into my tablet, and the switch happens in a matter of seconds with the help of Windows 10’s sidescreen controls (more about that in my next post!)

Yes it stands out the way I wanted it to, and the speed & sturdiness gives me so much confidence that I’d never fear the Spectre to stall when prepping for presentations. PEACE OF MIND YO!

5. VERSATILE TO THE VERY END

In the end, to be a Bond in Business, you know your handy tools has got to be versatile. You don’t have enough space to take with you everything, yet at the same time you want to keep them to a minimum so you don’t look like a bumbling fool. Which CEO you know walks around with a lot of bulk on their body? Case closed.

That’s exactly why having something so multipurposely fashioned is important to be inside your arsenal of weapons. The HP Spectre X360 not only does all of the above, it can even work as a presentation screen on-the-go and STILL make you look good, thanks to the seamless synergy it has with Intel and Windows 10!

If bending over backwards isn’t enough, the Spectre literally transforms itself into whatever you want it to become. In the process of doing so it doesn’t even lose its cool-factor, case in point as above! By the way, I have to add that the user interface is so well thought of compared to other makes of the same device – do you know how important it is for the power inlet and the power button to be on the same side? I’ll let it simmer in your head.

Seriously though, versatility is one of the most important traits an entrepreneur must have in order to survive through waves of difficulties. Even now as I blog about the Spectre, I’ve got some end of year issues I have to solve but thanks to knowing how to manage the issues and having my teammates at my back – it didn’t become too much of a problem. To that respect, I readily admit that the HP Spectre X360 is one of the best laptops I’ve used in my entire lifespan, being so versatile, fast, long battery life and supports my favourite apps on Windows 10.

Conclusion?

Yes, I like what I see, #WIN10.

I’m also readily admitting that while this unit is on loan to me for the purpose of “making magic”, I’m already preparing to buy this exact unit to accompany me for the next 2 years of my life – that’s how much I’m willing to testify for this Bond Beast we call Spectre.

How about you? What’s the weapon of your choice? Do share, especially you Apple lovers – let’s see how are able to defend your machines against my beast!
If you don’t have any yet, I’d recommend you to head to http://makemagic.my/, you’ll be able to find out the best laptop ranges for you spanning multiple brands according to the person that you are. Get your Bond weapon sorted for 2016 and you’re set for life.

It turned 15th December 2015 this morning.

And I was reminded by Facebook on some old tweets which went something like this:

https://www.facebook.com/christock/posts/131775073549990

I mean, to remember the company’s birthdate is a must (much like how important your loved one’s birthday is to you) but to see it on Facebook’s memories.. Man, that was one heck of a journey!

Yes, I said I would do it. And I did it. And 5 years later…

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100466740816685&set=a.680881907265.197122.222400858&type=3&theater

Yes we’ve come a long way baby!

The directors and I went to collect the awards a week before knowing that it was probably too early to admit we’re one of the 10 leading social media agencies in Malaysia, but hey, we’ll certainly do our best to live up to the hype!

I mean, who’d knew that I’d be representing Dato’ Lee Chong Wei’s digital account, consulting to the God of Stand Up Comedy in Malaysia Harith Iskander, managing really prestigious brands and serving retainer clients for more than 3 years under the brand name of SocialGrooves.com.

Our belief of Connecting Businesses and Communities is truly making an impact, and our clients are beginning to appreciate our foresight especially in the game of stamina in terms of brand recognition and advocacy.

At the same time, who says we can’t reap the fruits we’ve sown over the past 5 years? A dream to own a yacht some day, can? *grin*

Anyhow, thanks to Top 10 Malaysia for the award, and thanks for connecting us with some of the most prestigious network in town.

I mean, it’s not often you get to meet with founders of super successful enterprises like Joe who runs Sangkaya

Anyway happy 5th anniversary to SocialGrooves.com, and may we continue to rise above to raise the industry level for the benefit of businesses and communities!

Hi! Thanks for dropping by my humble blog, which I started since 2006, ever since the days of Geocities and Tripod. Yeap, I was one of them pioneers in using social media during those times where I shared about my experiences living life at London while studying at Imperial College London. I also shared how a student from overseas, typically Malaysia, could experience all I experienced with the little resources we have in terms of time and money, and how to maximize all of that through the little tips and tricks we now know as life-hacking.

Little did I know that my little blog could spearhead me into what I am now – one of Prestige Top 40 Under 40 2012 recipient, a nominee at the Newman Creative Pioneer Award 2014, the co-founder cum social entrepreneur of an award-winning social enterprise outfit EYE Project, founder of SocialGrooves.com a boutique social media consultancy agency working with clients such as Maybank and Domino’s, a digital branding consultant to well known personalities like Dato’ Lee Chong Wei & Harith Iskander and many other roles which you can read on my About Me section, all within 8 years!

Basically, I owe it all to social media, my passion in all things IT and of course, computers & mobile phones. And I am no one more special than you are – not as talented, not as handsome (or pretty), not super well off, basically as normal as it gets lah – a typical gamer and manga reader (I love Crayon Shin Chan, Naruto, One Piece, and recently One Punch Man!). The secret lies in my secret techniques, life hacks using technology, in order to achieve so much together with my collaborators, business partners, and partners-in-crime. In this post, I want to share with you 6 of the many tips on how you can empower yourself to do everything FASTER, with BIGGER RESULTS and most importantly, LOOK GOOD doing so Without further ado, let’s begin!

(Ps do share if you have an even better way of doing things okay?)

Use a Windows-Intel device!

I’m not joking.

I started my journey as a highly curious boy with a PC powered by Intel. And since most PCs at that time are equipped with Windows and Intel, learning became a breeze. Every iteration of the latest Windows and Intel processor defies all odds in terms of how we integrate our lives with technology, and just recently Intel coined the best processor ever – the 6th generation intel Core Processor Family (formerly Skylake) making it an ultimate upgrade. It is so fast and seamless – doesn’t even lag as I switch between Desktop and Tablet mode! Show you proof in my next few posts under the my #makemagiceveryday series

But yeah, it helps me to switch between work & play, so who needs more than one device now?! My bag now looks slimmer than ever without the need of stuffing in 1 iPad, 1 laptop and 1 tablet into it haha.

Be Ever-Ready for anything!

Manage energy, not time. Your energy limits what you can do with your time, so manage it wisely. Being able to do many things simultaneously helps me to keep my ideas fresh, and since I don’t waste a lot of time waiting, I end up just doing awesome work! Ideas can come from anywhere, inspired by anything. However you must always remember to MAKE THAT DECISION.

Of course the problem with multitasking is that often your battery runs out. This postpones work done and you’d have to find another café to recharge. Well I basically said goodbye to that – my new HP Spectre X360 lasts up to 10 hours, it’s true! Big plans need an ultimate sidekick like a Windows-intel device to work magic!

Make magic but still stay stylish!

The slim size of the my new laptop is a serious plus point! Talk about being sleek and stylish – especially with Doria next to me <3

Honestly I got to where I am not because I work harder than most, or because I’m smarter or anything – it’s how I brand myself. What people see me use, what I wear, it creates a lasting impression & that’s why I make sure I look good & stylish anytime, any day. Using my HP Spectre X360 daily wherever I go definitely helped

Always challenge yourself & never say ‘enough’

Know your goals and set a mental note to remind yourself every day. The only person you should be better than is the person you were yesterday. That’s how I ended up managing Dato’ Lee Chong Wei’s social media platforms & responsible for his commercial & collaborative performances!

Every year I aim for a new recognition and challenges with clients, and I’m glad my handy sidekick can keep up with me so far. By the way, that’s what Windows 10 is all about – they knew what didn’t work & made it into something awesome through innovation and more importantly, feedback!

Speaking of innovation, I’ll share about Intel Real Sense & Windows Hello technology next! It’ll be followed by some productivity apps recommendation (have you the new native apps like Mail?! Uber cool!), a few shortcuts I’ve found useful while working on the go and of course, the all-new Microsoft-exclusive browser – Microsoft Edge!

Learn from mistakes

Every day, I make mistakes. The only difference, I’m the FIRST to make the mistake. And when you’re the first, the only person who knows it’s a mistake is YOU!

Best of all, magic truly happens usually during the process of making mistakes. You’ll find something new, something no one has ever done and creating something no one has event seen. That’s why I’m truly honoured to be able to work with two legendary brands – Microsoft and Intel, and hope they will continue to feed me with the latest technology so I can be first to experience and share it with you all.

Feel free to share constructive comments about what you love or what you don’t love!

Disagree with me? Do share, there’s always room for more magic

NEXT UP: ALL ABOUT THE HP SPECTRE X360 – Ain’t it a BEAUTY?!

I just wanted to share more about the Merdeka Award, because it truly deserves more awareness than what it has now. Each year it highlights individuals who have done some crazy amazing impact that you and I probably don’t find sexy, but it’s like a game changing moment that improves all our lives as a whole! Just recently, Dr Jemilah Mahmood of Mercy Malaysia is one of this year’s recipients, read here; http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/10/01/jemilah-mahmood-receives-merdeka-award/

I had the opportunity to share at one of the #MerdekaAward Roundtable among friends who are passionate about the youths and the impact it has on our relatively young country recently. I’m sure you know of Dzameer Dzulkifli, Co-founder and Managing Director of Teach for Malaysia; then you have the young Dr Kamalan Jeevaratnam, Recipient of the Merdeka Award Grant for International Attachment 2014; next is the pretty & amazing Suhaili Micheline Ahmad Kamil, Choreographer, Lecturer & Performer; and finally power lady Suzanne Lee, Documentary Photographer. Of course, we were hosted by Cynthia Ng of ASTRO Awani who I’ve met several times already, and still amazed by her intelligence & beauty!

Here’s the video:

You can watch it on the link above, but in summary this is what I have to say about the topic:

“With such rich and diverse cultures in Malaysia, our people can go anywhere, do anything and succeed. There is no reason why we can’t be a global citizen and do more for our nation. Our young people have an important role to play in our nation’s development, hence, they need to take charge of their future. They need to capitalise on the bountiful support available to them and get ahead.”

It is only then that the nation’s young generation will be ready and equipped to assume a bigger role in helping shape Malaysia as a developed nation, in the years ahead.

I’ve got more to say about this, but it’ll have to wait for another blog post. I’m the meantime I’d like to convey my thanks to the founders of the Merdeka Awards, the three supporting pillars Petronas, ExonnMobil & Shell, and to the royal patron Sultan Dr Nazrin Shah of the Merdeka Trust – He’s been super inspiring of the late among all the shit that’s happening, a voice of reason.

Thank you for driving the need for a #betterMalaysia thought this joint effort.

So here I am, preparing myself for my first ever talk at the United Kingdom after having graduated from Imperial College London just about 10 years ago. returning to home soil in Malaysia to build my career & contribute to solve some of her problems. It still feels surreal, but one does not simply miss out on an opportunity to be on a panel with amazing youths all over the world to debate whether social entrepreneurship could be taught at the @HEGoingGlobal!

It’s been a fantastic journey throughout, even a surprise to myself, that I would be here doing what I do. Basically, my current portfolio are the following: I’m a social entrepreneur at EYE Project, a digital marketer at SocialGrooves.com, the digital manager to Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, a founding Global Shaper at the Global Shapers Community Kuala Lumpur Hub but most importantly, a Malaysian building his own version of a #betterMalaysia. And I remember all I ever wanted to do was make a difference to people’s lives.

And now, to be part of a global event organized by the British Council, is one way I can thank everyone who ever supported me to be where I am today. Thank you, my family, friends, partners, associates, social media followers and all. You guys made me happen :’)

Teaching Social Enterprise? Young Social Entrepreneurs Debate

So yeah, this Going Global Panel Session will be happening on the 1st June at Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London, in less than 2 weeks! Here’s where I need your help: what do YOU think about this topic? Can we create social entrepreneurs, or is it something we have to personally experience first in order to “make the leap” headstrong into social entrepreneurship?

In other words, even if there were such thing as a course on social entrepreneurship, how should it be done? Do share your answers, as it will be a good piece of material for discussion during the event.

Now here’s more about the panel: it will be taking place at the Going Global, a forum for education world leaders to debate international higher and further education issues and challenges, and to discuss collaborative solutions. The key theme for the event is “Connecting Cultures, Forging Futures”, the idea that the fusion of diverse cultures generates a creative force, which is a major catalyst of leading edge innovation. Investment in the connection of these cultures produces a tangible return and measurable impact for the future.

Regina is a software developer and social entrepreneur with a passion for using technology to bring social change. Regina is an Ashoka Fellow, an Aspen Institute of New Voices Fellow, a GOOD fellow, a Global Shaper of the Accra hub of the World Economic Forum, Vital Voices Fellow, finalist for the African Digital Woman of the Year and a Change Leader with Tigo Reach For Change. Ashesi is a private, non-profit liberal arts university located in Ghana, with a msion to educate a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial leaders in Africa; to cultivate among its students critical thinking skills, concern for others and the courage to transform a continent. Her university education included economics, leadership, and entrepreneurship. She started working in the corporate sector. While she was initially unaware of social entrepreneurship, she was interested in solving social problems. She approached her lecturers, and was encouraged to apply her learnings to tackle social problems, and link up with alumni. Her university education helped her as a social entrepreneur with problem solving, business and computer science skills, access to advice and encouragement, and linking her into a network. She also learnt the need for a sustainable business, not reliant on funds. She reflects that had the focus of her education been social entrepreneurship, she would perhaps have started her social enterprise sooner.

Ayu (Lee) was born and grew up in a remote village. Encouraged by his parents, he was the first from his village to study at university. He wanted to provide opportunities to others. He reflects that traditionally education in Thailand teaches students to compete for jobs in industry, government or hospitality, be motivated by money, and move to the city, rather than encouraging them to return and contribute to communities they may come from. Ayu’s education has played an important role for him in overcome barriers that he may otherwise have faced. His university education gave him credibility and enabled communication across linguistic, educational, professional and geographical boundaries, important for sharing experiences of coffee farmers and promoting his social enterprise. Ayu sees higher education as providing relevant skills and knowledge applicable to needs assessments, understanding problems faced by the community, and developing a business plan. However, he asks, how can knowledge from university be brought back and applied to the community, e.g. to solve social problems. How can students be enabled to choose options that involve helping communities, rather than just focusing on making money or studying for itself?

Christopher Tock, Co-founder and Executive Director, Empowering Youth Endeavours, Malaysia

Christopher is a passionate advocate for youth empowerment. He is a Global Shaper of the Kuala Lumpar hub of the World Economic Forum. He sees life experience, rather than university education, as important in the journey of a social entrepreneur. While he advocates that social entrepreneurship cannot be taught, he sees exposure to social enterprise as necessary in order for those who take up social enterprise to get the support they need, especially from peers. He sees four main factors as influencing a young person’s decision to approach social entrepreneurship as a career decision: 1) how supportive universities are to the idea of SE, 2) the level of activity from student-based NGOs such as ENACTUS, 3) access (or distraction) to too many opportunities and 4) most importantly their respective family background. From his own experience of higher education, rather than the specific education he received, he found that being away from his own environment, being involved with student organisations, and being encouraged and supported by peers, educators, and family, assisted him on his journey as a social entrepreneur.

Joshua Bicknell, Co-founder of Balloon Ventures, UK

Joshua found that there was no clear route into social entrepreneurship. While Joshua did not study entrepreneurship or social entrepreneurship, his university studies in History and Politics equipped him with skills in writing, developing a coherent argument, telling a good story, researching and public speaking that he uses daily as a social entrepreneur. He “stumbled” into running a social enterprise, although his idea from research he did for his Masters dissertation. He did not initially know what social enterprise was, and would have liked more exposure to social enterprise and business, with it being presented as a viable career path. He sees a big responsibility/opportunity for universities to open the minds of young people and show them all the possibilities in the world. He reflects that in today’s climate, where there is competition and uncertainty, entrepreneurship skills – social or otherwise – are essential, and should be included in university education.

I’ve always believed that by helping others achieve their mission in life, you’ll be rewarded by experience no money can buy.

I didn’t expect that the reward to come back to me by way of being nominated as one of the Top 5 Creative Pioneer Awards in 2014 last year under the Entrepreneurship category.

Although I didn’t win the title, it went rightfully to Melvin Tong and Kelvin Tong founders of Extreme Supercars, the twins who have inspired so many others by showing that nothing can stop you from pursuing success!

Thank you SO much!

Heineken Thirst 2013 is certainly one party where party goers would look forward too! This year, it took place on a chilly Saturday evening, 14 December 2013 at Sepang International Circuit with its most extensive and eclectic list of stars to date who played across two impressive stages.

The Green Stage main headliner is none other David Guetta, The Parisian DJ where most of his songs were chart toppers on radio! Australia’s duo Nervo blended really well with their glam act behind the deck along with Heineken Thirst’s stylish theme. Another big name Afrojack, the Dutch house superstar who brought the house down with his great playlist and visuals. Lastly, our local regulars Goldfish and Blink and B.A.T.E.

The Star Arena featured Dutch trance duo W&W spinning their uplifting trance sets. R3hab from Holland, UK’s EDM legend Example (he has a great track with Calvin Harris!), my personal favourite – up and rising 19 year old Madeon from France and local DJs Xu and Bunga from Twilight Actiongirl.

The festival was a bang. Why?
Party goers were mesmerized by the fireworks. Not to mention, I was very drawn to the exciting designs worn by the Heineken girls! The designs on the stage were decorated stylishly and also limited edition bottles of Heineken, the Heineken CLUB bottles were being served at the VIP lounge and Heinesuites. These babies only reveal their designs under UV light (I was given a tiny UV torchlight at the door whereby I was totally clueless at the point of receiving it) Care to see the bottle? Scroll for more!
