It’s September again which only means one thing: Arthur’s Day is back! And this year it’s going to be bigger, bolder and definitely a treat for music fans. The launch party was held at KL Live with GUINNESS® fans and members of the media gathered to see what this year’s Arthur’s day has in store for us, while enjoying our perfect pints of GUINNESS®. Of course since my social business Empowering Youth Endeavors (EYE) Project are on the SIX winners of the Arthur Guinness Fund – British Council Social Enterprise Awards recipient, we’ll be seeing you there at our booth so please do come and say hi!

Yummy!

With any party, we needed to get through the formality first, so first we had Bruce Dallas, Marketing Director of Guinness Anchor Berhad giving us a speech: “Arthur’s Day celebrates the founder of GUINNESS®, Arthur Guinness, and his remarkable legacy of goodness through music. This year, we pay homage to his bold character and people like him, those who are ‘more’ than just ordinary; much like the Artists that will be rocking the Arthur’s Day stage, our Arthur Guinness Fund recipients and our GUINNESS® drinkers, who choose a GUINNESS® every time.”

Bruce Dallas, Marketing Director of Guinness Anchor Berhad and Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of Guinness Anchor Berhad launching the celebrations with our resident Guinness Girl & host, Serena C.

The main aim of the party was to reveal the 3 exciting International acts due to perform at Sepang International Circuit, Welcome Centre. I’m actually pleasantly surprised that they have stayed away from the Urban and Hip Hop direction and brought us some proper Rock music and some Dance Pop (I’ll give them that since one of the songs of this band I actually really like)

So let’s play a “Guess the Song”.

I’m more than a bird,
I’m more than a plane
I’m more than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me

Easy right? This is Superman

(It’s not easy), written and performed by American singer-songwriter John Ondrasik, but better known by his stage name Five for Fighting.

Five for Fighting

Did you know that he has a degree in Applied Science and Mathematics? Anyway, here is what he has to say about the upcoming concert:

“I am very excited to be a part of the Arthur’s Day celebrations in Malaysia! Join me and millions around the world as we toast to one of the boldest man in history, Arthur Guinness and to those like him, the Arthur Guinness fund awardees, my comrades that will be rocking the Arthur’s Day stage this year and all of you fans out there! To Arthur!“

Alright, second act is a little alternative and a little punk, but maybe you know this song?

I wake up every evening
With a big smile on my face
And it never feels out of place
And you’re still probably working
At a nine to five pace
I wonder how bad that tastes…

No? Then how about….

“I wanna I wanna I wanna touch you, you wanna touch me too!”

First song was their first international hit: “Gives You Hell” and second song was “I Wanna” from the same album. Let me present The All American Rejects, formed in Oklahama in 1999 with lead vocalist and bass guitarist and pianist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Mike Kennerty, and drummer and percussionist Chris Gaylor.

All American Rejects

“Arthur’s Day is going to be one hell of ride and we have an exciting gig prepared especially for you, our Malaysian fans. We really appreciate the Arthur’s Day message on social entrepreneurship and how the Arthur Guinness fund has made an impact on thousands of people around the world. We are glad to be part of the celebrations this year in tribute to his unbelievable legacy.”

Last but not least, here’s a song I like:

The sun goes down
The stars come out
And all that counts
Is here and now
My universe will never be the same
I’m glad you came, I’m glad you came

Yes, boy bands are definitely making a comeback. The Wanted are English-Irish, plus point for me. One of the members even have Guinness in his name (well, McGuiness, but close enough right). Though not sure I like their latest hit Walks Like Rihanna, and that video sure brings back memories of our favourite boybands (N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Take That.. anymore?).

How about the boys who brought you hits like “Glad You

Had lotion reviews else, youtube geneticfairness So expiration and substitute started doing.

 Came”?

Anyway, here’s what they have to say: “We’re excited to be part of the Malaysian celebrations happening at Sepang International Circuit on the 27th of September 2013! We’re ready along with our comrades Five for Fighting and All American Rejects to rock the Arthur’s day stage this year as we pay tribute to Arthur Guinness and his legacy of goodness. To Arthur!“

Daniel from Wanted Symphony (key), Sam (guitar) and Ivan (guitar) from Busco, Caleb (drums) from Caravel

In honor of Arthur Guinness and those like him, Guinness paid tribute to our local heroes, our AGF Awardees at the Arthur’s Day launch party, in line with the theme of this year’s celebration “Celebrating Those Who Make Bolder Choices”:

1. Sabina Arokiam from Eats, Shoots, Roots (AGF Awardee)
2. Christopher Tock from EYE Project Management (AGF Awardee) – yours truly *bows*
3.
“More Opportunities” says the sub-headline of today’s Star RAGE section covering #WhatYouthWant from the government, and goes on to share what I feel what youths want most in this country. Unfortunately, that small little space isn’t enough to express completely on what I want to share about this topic I feel so closely about. Read on for the full length interview and do share if you agree, or comment in my blog if you disagree.

Let us work towards bringing forth the best of every driven youths there are, a move towards a #betterMalaysia!

To theStar RAGE:

Let’s start off with a general question, what do you think youths want most in this country?

Being around today’s youth all the time, from those who lead to those who just want to have fun, the one thing they want most in this country are opportunities, opportunities from the government to play a larger role in their own discipline either for recognition or for money. Unfortunately most of them are afraid of taking risk & only the few will take it up, but the rest will definitely cheer on as one of their own is truly represented as a voice for the youths.

What do you think about the freedom of speech of the youth of Malaysia? How can it be improved?

My personal opinion is that the youths of today has total freedom of speech, thanks to their exposure to the internet and access to all social networks, unlike some other countries who regulate the networks, like Iraq or North Korea. They can say whatever they want and would not fear repercussions, unless of course they are bounded by laws that comes with privileges such as scholarships, in which case it is perfectly normal that they can’t simply say what they want. How can it be improved? Allow even more accessibility to the internet to the youths living in rural areas so that they gain exposure to what is being said out there & be able to educate themselves. However, we do have to ensure that youths observe certain netiquettes just like how Malaysians generally are in real life, as it seems like the freedom of speech has enabled youths to be, at times, “melampau“.

What do you think about the education system for youths? Are they being taught well? What do you think youths should focus on learning (in addition to their current education)?

As one of the co-founders of EYE Project, our believe is that while the education system promotes academic achievements in a competitive space, resulting in hardworking, top graded youths – we are constantly forgetting the fact that certain necessary life skills in the form of basic soft skills are the ones that really prepare them for the life of independent adulthood – and are sometimes non-existent throughout their learning period. Together with our partners like TalentCorp & PwC Malaysia, EYE aims to instill some form of leadership in our youths based on their passion, so that they will pick up skills like communication, critical thinking, decision making, being resourceful & so much more, turning them into high valued, driven & ambitious youths ready to offer more to themselves & the country.

How do you think the youth can be empowered in society?

As mentioned previously, our youths in general, not just the ones obtaining high scores in their academic papers, should first believe that they are not an inferior species. They first need to be confident in order to have a personal belief that tells them they are ready to lead an independent life of a fully working adult. This can only come if they explore outside of their comfort zone, out of university space or even within their office table for older, working youths. In order for this to happen, they can start doing one of the following: apply for internships, join a non-profit organisation that allows them to meet like minded people, or join EYE’s many events through their platforms, the Student Engagement Center (SEC) for university students, or Young Corporate Malaysians (YCM) for young corporates where they are able to meet same aged youths to connect, collaborate & communicate. All of these methods are FREE & only require time & effort – just be a fan of their Facebook channel first.

What do you think is lacking in our youth today? What is it they do not yet have knowledge of but should look forward to?

The one thing that is lacking with our youths of today is the drive to explore & equip themselves with general knowledge beyond their education materials. Without these, complacency becomes their biggest enemy, and therefore stopping themselves from fulfilling their true talents, becoming a producer rather than just a consumer. We know they are capable, but it dies with the unlit explosives within them, due to their fear of failure instilled throughout their lives.

As the next generation of leaders, what is your advice for youths today?

My advice for the youths is to

start thinking big – be ambitious, do not be afraid to dream and believe in yourself when others do not.

start small – while you’re young & invincible, don’t try to attempt initiatives beyond what you’re capable of at the start, or that failure will not only cause you to stop believing in yourself, but gives others a negative perception that is hard to come out of.

move fast – don’t wait for some opportunity to come before you embark on your journey, or for that funding to come before you begin an initiative. What you can do today you do it first, and the momentum will naturally take you somewhere towards achieving what you aim for.

And of course, with this advice hopefully we’ll have a new generation of youths who look towards a positive development and being part of the solution rather than just sitting on their bums complaining like a keyboard warrior. We can demand all we want for change, but the real change happens in the heart first – and usually the most difficult hurdle of them all.

It’s been 9 sweet months ever since EYE Project started, and a year since Socialgrooves began – both have come a long way, and grown to something the team and I are proud of. Personally, so much has happened, both in my career and in relationships. Roller coaster it has been, but I would say – more fantastic ups then depressingly down. For all of that, I am thankful to God for being so awesome to me and the people around me including my family and friends.

One of the highlights I have this year, is to be featured on Bernama TV‘s The Breakfast Club (Astro 502)- my first longest LIVE appearance on TV where I discussed about social media at large, about how my silly blog got popular, how I got involved in social media activism and even managed to slot in about how the opportunity for youths have come to Malaysia (in the form of EYE Project). This would not have happened if I did not stumble into @Syafique of the Motivation.my fame, which would not have happened if myHarapan did not invite me (it was a pitch to our Prime Minister @NajibRazak himself, too), and that would not have happened if @RoslanBZ did not have faith in me.

Below is the recording on Bernama TV’s YouTube channel – do excuse my excessive repeating and nervousness, was already doing my best!

There’s a lot more to share regarding the progress that has happened since the first twtup of the year (#1111TwtUp) at @JayaOne, to experiencing @TeachForMsia’s first crowning of 2011 Fellows, to some dramatic make ups and break ups, to meeting legends such as Professor Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank fame, seeing both @UKEC & @YCMS to the height of its progress and of course being best man to Wan Mohd Firdaus, le partner in crime, and many, many more wonderful and exciting moments!

But that will have to wait because I’ll be heading to @JayaOne to countdown to the mysterious year of 2012 – however, I feel that this coming year will be a legendary year, especially for the youths of Malaysia, because for once – their passion and efforts will be recognized and respected by the people of power, and thus, Malaysia’s progress into a high-income nation by 2020 will soon come to be true – thanks to the integrated efforts of both the young and the old!

Finally, the crystal clear vision I had since I was 20 years old was coming to materialize… and it is all thanks to the the support of some of the most fantastic people I’ve met over the years. Let’s greet 2012 with lots of bangs and blasts together!

Belbin Test – I first heard it when @KarFei, current president of AIESEC Malaysia told me that it was used to profile his team so that tasks can be delegated out successfully with minimum conflict. I immediately thought it would be so useful to figure out how to fully utilize our student volunteers for @SECMalaysia and @EYEProject, as we have many of them and a more complex system would have taken a long time.

The Belbin Test just took me 20 minutes max, and that’s because I thought long and hard at each question. This was the result that was given to me.

Coordinator 14
Resource Investigator 12
Plant 10

It wasn’t immediately obvious what the terms meant, but luckily in that excel sheet (yes, it lives on a simple excel sheet!) it gives a detailed explanation of what these meant.

Co-ordinator. Mature, confident, a good chairperson. Clarifies goals, promotes decision making, delegates well.
Resource Investigator. Extrovert, enthusiastic, communicative. Explores opportunities, develops contacts.
Plant. Creative, imaginative, unorthodox, solves difficult problems.

In other words, I would be a mix of the follow description:

The Co-ordinator has a strong sense of overall objectives. Is able to keep an open mind and value contributions from any source. Generally of average mental ability and creativity. Good at controlling and co ordinating resources, Democratic and encourages participation, but willing to take responsibility for decisions. Sometimes seen as reserved and detached, the coordinator’s ability to remain objective is valuable when directing the efforts and activities of others toward an overall goal or objective.

The Plant‘s name stems from ability to scatter around lots of ideas (seeds), many of which may lead to success while many may not. The Plant is the source of a team’s creativity, mirth a fertile and intelligent mind, with plenty of original ways of looking at things. The Plant is concerned with the challenge of the new and can be obsessive. Often seen as having a head in the clouds, can be unaware of the need for sensitivity towards others. The Plant may not have much time for protocol or the ‘proper` way of doing things, nor be terribly concerned with the practical implications of own schemes. Tends to be self-sufficient and can be a difficult and uncomfortable colleague. However, can also be caught up, in a wave of enthusiasm especially for own ideas, but also for others whose ideas capture the Plant’s imagination and can be swept along with general team euphoria. There is a childlike element present in the Plant – likes to be flattered and does not like own ideas criticised.

The Resource Investigator is the team’s ambassador in its dealings with the work beyond the team’s boundary. Has the capacity for making highly effective contact with people and for exploring anything new. Will respond to new situations as exciting challenges, but can also lose interest quite quickly if progress is slow or once the initial fascination has passed. Variety and people are the essential diet of the Resource Investigator, who also has the ability in turn to stimulate and motivate others. The need for new stimuli can often result in a ‘butterfly mind’ – flitting quickly from one thing to another very rapidly, and there can be a lack of self-discipline and failure to follow things through. It has been said that the Resource Investigator is either on the telephone or is meeting people and hates doing anything else.

After reading the above, I would be inclined to think that I belong to the Plant speciment, which makes most sense as my other partners in all my ventures would perfectly complement me to create a great team together. However it is very interesting to note other qualities I am not aware of, and who knows, I could grow those qualities to bring me to a higher state of mind, and thus, be a better leader perhaps?

What do you think you are, if you were to base your personality to the personalities/roles? For your benefit, I’ve attached the rest of the roles’ description below:

Shaper. Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. The drive and courage to overcome obstacles.
Monitor Evaluator. Sober, strategic and discerning. Sees all options, judges accurately.
Teamworker. Co-operative, mild, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens, builds, averts friction.
Implementer. Disciplined, reliable, conservative and efficient. Turns ideas into practical actions.
Completer Finisher. Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors and omissions, delivers on time.
Specialist. Single-minded, self-starting, dedicated. Provides knowledge and skills.

I’m a big fan of @WooThemes although I don’t use them all the time, but even more so, I’m a bigger fan of people who do REAL work for the benefit of others, for example, the co-owner of Woothemes @adii himself! He once blogged this:

Now this was exactly what I had in mind as I created my own startup called SocialGrooves.com, which is aimed to be a social business utilizing social media to promote other cause-centric businesses that are more often

Store better their Bar the extraction geneticfairness.org are can ingredients and preparing all It we.

not seen or known. Although the site is new, I’ve always been working with startups such as UKEC (or at least revitalizing it to its full glory), Young Corporate Malaysians (YCM), RandomAlphabets and its sister company Wago and even TeachForMalaysia, a new initiative whose objective is such that one day, all children in Malaysia will have the opportunity to attain excellent education. But most of these do not add to my rice bowl, hence, @SocialGrooves was formed on the 15th of December 2010, under the support of one Ong Kian Ming aka @imokman who said that I had to make a living for myself at the end of the day.

@SocialGrooves would not have formed if not for two people who joined me at the heart of it all, @YapThomas and @PD_Ren. Part of my own little ambition, the creation of the Engagement of Youth in the Economy (EYE) Project would not have started as well if not for @Re7a. The point here is that, if not for these people, none of this would have happened, and mind you none of them has gotten any pay because they want the companies to receive fundings first. Money will surely come, but passion and desire to make a winning product is really the most important factor as a startup! (this was how the initiatives mentioned above became successful anyway, because of the dedicated teams in each of the respective startups).

Now in every initiative, there are always leaders associated with them. For @WooThemes, there was @adii, Magnus and Mark and crew.

For UKEC, @WMFirdaus, myself and the rest of the crew compromising of Lopes, @aliaishk, @iedilputra, @rashdanh, Wan Zu, Ain and more.

For RandomAlphabets we have @ZainHD, @NikiCheong and I along with playas @vinivedivici @devuschka @shaqyl @radiojules and more.

For Teach For Malaysia, there was @Dzameer, @keeransivarajah and I before super crew @nawranajebe and others came in.

So you see, it always starts with a small group of people before the community grows. And now, all of the initiatives have grown so much it’s amazing. It’s part of people’s lives. It’s become a reason to live. The people who start all of these, they are inspirations by themselves. I needed @Adii to know this, and his reply was as above!

The next thing I know, he says

Tweets like this, makes everything so much more worthwhile.

Clicking the link brought me to his blog, on this post right here:

Can you imagine the thrill of having someone like @adii blogging about you, appreciating a reply from some random nobody who’s a big fan of his work? This is a person who leads some 45,000 community of users using @Woothemes and is currently heading Aboard Entrepreneurship, a project about entrepreneurship and empowering upcoming entrepreneurs do be better entrepreneurs in the future by teaching them skills and inspiring them via the shared knowledge and experience of all of AE’s contributors, some of which consist of the people in the list below:

Seriously @Adii, not only did you inspire me with your work, but with this single post, I feel that I can achieve this year’s seemingly impossible target I’ve set for myself and my amazing team. The impact of your post even beats the highlight of being made into a referral point at Forbes’s blog for this post I made about Obama and the Digital Knights of the rectangular table

The above is a screenshot that I will forever remember as my first step into one of Forbes’s many powerful list
